It is often a hidden how many specialties psychology offers. A lot of students do not realize the diverse career options until they actually major in psychology at a university. Today, we are going to briefly look at some of the career specialties available in psychology.
Counseling psychology allows professional counselors (Master's degree) and counseling psychologists (Doctoral degree) to provide therapy services to a variety of clients like children, adolescents, adults, elderly. Some counselors work with one or more of these groups. Areas of practice include, but are not limited to career counseling, substance abuse, mental health, forensic counseling, rehabilitation counseling, rehabilitation counseling (working with individuals having disabilities) performance/sports counseling, etc.
Forensic Psychology available on Masters and Doctoral level allows students in psychology to evaluate the mental state of a person standing trial. If the person is claiming the insanity defense, then the forensic psychologist will conduct psychological assessments with the person and give testimony about their conclusions.
Sports/Performance Psychology (available on Masters and Doctoral level) allows students to work with sports teams, military, medical centers with surgeons, and other individuals that do high performance/concentration jobs. The sports psychology counselor or psychologist would help individuals achieve optimum performance levels, stay balanced in mind-body health, and identify challenges to the work and health of the individual or team.
Industrial/Organizational Psychology or Business Psychology (available on Masters and Doctoral level) allow students to apply psychology to the world of business. Students that enter this field will consult businesses on their hiring practices, conduct or recommend personality assessments for potential applicants, assess consumer relations with the business, help workers to collaborate and maintain a productive environment.
